How we help

Our goal is to make the future brighter for every child with cancer, from diagnosis to recovery and beyond:

  • Helping families cope with their child’s diagnosis
  • Creating and connecting communities of support
  • Providing scholarships to childhood cancer survivors
  • Funding the most promising research

Our History

1987: THE BEGINNING

In 1987, Edwina Eddy founds the Candlelighters after losing her 17 year old son Bryan to acute myelogenous leukemia. He challenged his mother to "do something" to help the kids that would inevitably come after him.

2002: INVESTMENT IN RESEARCH

Canada’s top pediatric oncologists come together to form the C17 Council. The Foundation becomes the primary funder of clinical trials and childhood cancer research. To date, we have funded almost $5 million in critical, targeted research through the C17.

2003: SURVIVOR SCHOLARSHIPS

The Survivor Scholarship Program is launched, providing much needed financial support and recognition for young survivors of childhood cancer who wish to pursue post-secondary education.

CANDLELIGHTERS

Edwina names her support organizations the Candlelighters, a reference to the expression, “it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

Under the wing of the Canadian Cancer Society, the Candlelighters work to develop family support groups across Canada. Many of these groups were run by parents of children with cancer.

TODAY

Through innovative research, integral programming, and community building, Childhood Cancer Canada continues to fulfill Edwina Eddy’s mission to improve the lives of children affected by cancer. Our goal is to find a cure for all childhood cancers. We won’t stop until we do.
