Benevolent Fund

Every year in Canada, 1,500 children will be diagnosed with cancer. Despite the remarkable advances in childhood cancer treatment over the last 40 years, approximately one in five children will never recover.

The families of children with cancer face incredible burdens. Diagnosis and treatment are emotionally and physically taxing on the entire family. It is not unusual for parents to cease working or to take extended leaves in order to be with their child, leaving many families financially strained.

Through the Benevolent Fund, Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation provides qualifying families with much needed financial assistance to help cover the costs of their child’s funeral. The Foundation will fund up to $1,000 (towards the balance owed) in expenses to the family’s funeral service provider for final arrangements and memorial services.

Families cannot apply directly to the Foundation for financial assistance. The Benevolent Fund is provided for families who are referred by their nurse or social worker. As we hope to help as many families in need as possible, we appreciate the pre-selection done by health care providers to ensure that only requests for families in critical financial need are submitted.

To submit a referral, nurses or social workers must complete the Benevolent Fund application form, outlining a brief history of the child’s illness and the family’s financial situation. The Foundation CEO reviews all applications to ensure that the information meets the financial assistance requirements. The Foundation will send a cheque to the funeral home and a sympathy card to the family. No other contact will be made with the family.

All information related to the Benevolent program is confidential.

Our goal is to provide the most financially in need families with assistance to ensure a lasting memory of their child for family, friends, and community.

All families should have the ability to honour and celebrate the life of their child.
