My name is Xochitl Smith and I am a survivor of Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In June of 2005 my whole life changed. I was living in a small rural town in British Columbia and spent the next 6 months receiving chemotherapy as well as radiation, at the nearest child cancer centre which was an 8 hour drive in Edmonton. I had grown a lot during the time while I was sick, learned who I was as a person, and become more confident. When I graduated high school in 2008, I was at the top of my class, receiving the Graham Edwards award which is quite prestigious, given to students who have overcome adversity to complete their education. In Sept. 2008, I was informed that I had relapsed and I was devastated, but after receiving chemotherapy, radiation and an autologous stem cell transplant, I have been out of treatment. I am currently enrolled in the Pre-Dental Hygeine University Transfer Program and hope to open my own hygiene clinic in a small town in Canada in the future.
