Fifty-Nine Canadian Landmarks Lit Gold for Childhood Cancer

#MakeCanadaGold and #HeroPoseChallenge to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September

August 30, 2021 (TORONTO, ON) – Fifty-nine Canadian landmarks will be lit gold this September to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month for the Foundation's #MakeCanadaGold campaign (full list below). Additionally, kids and families impacted by childhood cancer will be honoured with the #HeroPoseChallenge, where participating social media users post themselves in the Hero Pose using the campaign hashtag. Childhood Cancer Canada today also launched Giphy stickers to compliment the #MakeCanadaGold and #HeroPoseChallenge campaigns and a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Facebook Frame.

“About one in five children diagnosed will not survive cancer and this number actually increases beyond five years”, said Sandi Hancox, Executive Director (Interim) of Childhood Cancer Canada. “Although outcomes are positive overall, some diagnoses are difficult to treat or have low cure rates, and many treatments lead to long-term health issues for survivors. September is an opportunity to remind Canadians that there is still more work to be done to improve outcomes for kids with cancer in Canada.”

Started in 2018, the Hero Pose Challenge asks social media users to post an image or video of themselves with their hands on their hips, chests proud, and heads held high using the campaign hashtag #HeroPoseChallenge, tagging and asking others to take the challenge to help spread awareness. The now annual campaign honours the strength of children dealing with cancer and resulted in over six million social media impressions in 2020.

To compliment the campaigns, the Foundation is launching five Giphy stickers for the #HeroPoseChallenge, one Giphy sticker for the #MakeCanadaGold campaign, and two new Foundation Giphy stickers for general posts on Instagram stories. The Foundation is also launching a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month profile frame for Facebook. Participants can find the Giphy stickers and Facebook Frame by using the key words: Childhood Cancer Canada, #heroposechallenge, and #makecanadagold.

To join the awareness campaigns, participants should follow @childhoodcancercanada on social media and use the hashtags #HeroPoseChallenge or #MakeCanadaGold.

Childhood Cancer Canada is very grateful for their support.

Childhood Cancer Canada supports families across the country who have been impacted by childhood cancer with programs that include: Empower Packs, provided to children newly diagnosed with cancer; the COVID-19 Emergency Fund, for Canadian childhood cancer families who have been financially impacted by the pandemic; Survivor Scholarships, for childhood cancer survivors with post-secondary academic aspirations; and the Benevolent Fund, that provides financial assistance to help families with the costs of their child's funeral. The Foundation is also the primary charitable funding partner of clinical trials and childhood cancer research for C17, comprised of leading pediatric oncologists and hematologists in Canada.
