Hero of the Month - Alex-Tousignant

Alex Tousignant: This Month’s Hero

Meet Alex, a Paediatric Palliative Care Nurse who cares for children and provides support to families every day. Her commitment and passion to help kids live their dreams beyond cancer is what led her to create Fight Club.

Alex has cared for children with many complex care diagnoses as a part of her career as a Registered Nurse, but none have impacted her more than the paediatric cancer patients. Now, this mother of two is using the little time she has left in her day to honour all the children and families she has cared for over the years.

When Alex is not spending time with her own daughters or caring for children with cancer at her local hospital, she is making T-shirts that are empowering kids with cancer to live beyond their cancer. It was all inspired by a special boy named Griffin.

“Griffin was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at 16 months old, and he was the ultimate fighter surviving this monstrous diagnosis far beyond what is statistically common,” she says. “His family has been a beacon of hope and encouragement for families in the oncology community, refusing to allow repeatedly devastating cancer diagnoses to stop them from living life to its fullest.”

Griffin and his mom Tamy, a tireless advocate the childhood cancer community, were her inspiration. Tamy is the owner of her own apparel company that she started after Griffin was diagnosed and donates a portion of sales to the hospital.

“They made me realize that I can also do something purposeful,” she says. “When you care for children with cancer and sit with their parents, there is nothing you can say or do. You feel a level of helplessness. And I am forever impacted by their fight and strength to keep going.”

It's why Alex created Fight Club, a clothing line under her apparel company, which now donates proceeds from sales of the empowering t-shirts, sweatshirts, and onesies to Childhood Cancer Canada.

“I know that there is little funding for paediatric oncology research, and I also wanted to directly support families.”

Alex says it’s her way of letting the children and families she has cared for over the years know that she stands with them. “I will always hold them closely in my heart and will forever be changed having witnessed their incredible courage,” she says.

Griffin passed away on March 18th, 2024 but his legacy will continue, thanks to the funds raised from Fight Club and because of the heroic efforts of his family to raise awareness of childhood cancer. To honour Griffin, Alex has introduced the option of adding a "Gold for Griff" sleeve print to any Fight Club crew. The cost of the sleeve print is being covered by Alex to allow 100% of the proceeds of this purchase to be donated to Childhood Cancer Canada, in addition to proceeds of the Fight Club line, which are donated monthly.
